School Leaders
Our student school leaders are year 6 students, elected by their peers at the end of the previous year. The students are nominated by their peers and teachers and evaluated during the year 5 leadership camp for their ability to confidently lead a group and be a respectful role model. The nominated students then prepare and present a speech to their peers and teachers and elections are then carried out.
The student school leader positions include school captain, vice school captain, sports house captains. The student leaders speak at official school events, lead their sports teams at events and carnivals and act as role models for the rest of the students.
The other leadership positions at Gilston State School include languages captain, music captain, cultural captain and peer mediators. These students support the school leaders.
Student Representative Council Class Leaders
As well as our school leaders, we also have Student Council Representatives who represent their class on the student council. The class leaders are elected at the start of each year and gives an opportunity for students to be able to participate in organising events such as the student disco’s, fund raising events and help decide how best to spend any money the student council raises. Over the years the student council has purchased many items to make life at Gilston State School even better for the students such as new sporting uniforms for our interschool sporting teams and supporting many charities including Story Dogs.
Peer Mediators
The senior student peer mediator program provides opportunities for members of staff and year 6 students to work together to create a happy and harmonious community.
Working in groups of three, year 6 seniors will receive training to assist teachers on duty. They will be helping to create a positive and inclusive playground atmosphere and may even assist in resolving some low level issues.
Peer mediators will be using listening skills, assertiveness, brainstorming and empathy to navigate the playground. Since seniors are the most experience students, they will be demonstrating responsible playground behaviour and will establish appropriate language and social skills. We believe this is a very valuable part of our school leadership program, and plays an important part in our student's social development.
